Lord Owen: Hubris Syndrome and the need for research. (2012)

Further background to Hubris Syndrome and the Daedalus Trust, and the need for more research in the area. “We’ve now got acquired personality disorders. The question is can it affect prestigious leaders? And the answer is yes.”

Speaking at the launch of the report “Did Anyone Learn Anything From Equitable Life?” at King’s College on 7 September 2012.

 

Q: “When companies go over the cliff like this – have people got something wrong with them, in a mental sense?”

A: “Probably not in a mental sense… but quite a number of them have personalities which are bizarre sometimes, which are, aggressive

…“The medical profession for years believed that personality was God-given, and you coukdn’t acquire it. Eventually, with post-traumatic stress disorder, the profession reluctantly accepted that this was an acquired condition. This is a big breakthrough: we’ve now got acquired personality disorders. The question is can it affect prestigious leaders? And the answer is yes.”
